Attacks by vampire bats led some villagers to leave their homes in Condorcanqui Province, near the Ecuadorian border. However, Peruvian authorities assured them that the outbreak is under control. "Of course, people get frightened. They are temporarily leaving their homes, and they are getting into the jungle," said the Vice-President of the Inter-Ethnic Jungle Development Association, Mr. Shapiom Noningo. Dr. Luis Suarez, Head of the General Epidemiology Office in the Peruvian Ministry of Health, declared to Reuters that 2 outbreaks occurred in different places, one between last September and November [2006], in which 3 children died, and another one last November [2006], in which 8 children died. "All of them were less than 6 years old," Dr. Suarez stated.

The total number of persons bitten is 1101 -- the last one was bitten last December [2006] -- and they already received their rabies vaccination; some doses were brought from Argentina and Ecuador . Blood is the only food consumed by vampire bats. They only live in Latin America, and these animals attack humans when they are not able to find suitable animals, since they may die if they go for 2 days without food. In spite of their poor reputation, Mr. Merlin Tuttle, an American expert, emphasized that vampire bats are docile and easy to domesticate, and they must not be vilified. Vampire bats avoid daylight, and they discreetly bite the heads or feet of sleeping humans. Curiously enough, they get accustomed to the blood of certain persons. Mr. Noningo said that 10 000 persons live in this valley, but there are at least 2500 persons living in the most affected areas, which are the home of the Huambisa and Aguaruna native communities.

Sixty-eight pupils stung by bees

KLANG: Children screamed in the posh, quiet side of Taman Sri Andalas in Klang as swarms of bees stung them while the pupils were on a familiarisation run for the upcoming Cross Country Sweet Run 2007 next week.
Sixty-eight pupils of SK Taman Sri Andalas at Jalan Sri Damak 57, were stung.
Four were warded while the others received outpatient treatment at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (TAR) Hospital.
All four, Siti Aminah Natahan, D. Thibanraaj, Muhammad Hasif Ishak and Nur Fatin Atherah have been warded for observation as each one had complained of nausea while Thibanraaj had fainted in the school 25 minutes after being stung.
Bubbly lad, D. Thibanraaj who was admitted at Ward 6B said the incident occurred at about 8.15am when his fellow school mates were running along Jalan Sri Siantan 47.
“As soon as I turned into the road from Jalan Sri Siantan 50, I could see black dots hovering over the other pupils in front of me.
“Within seconds as I ran forward, I felt a sharp needle-like pain on my head, only then I realised that bees had stung me and others who were screaming,” he said.
Thibanraaj who was stung three times added: “All of us waved our hands frantically in a bid to ward off the swarm of bees hovering and crashing onto our face.
"Others ran helter-skelter down the road away from the hive that was within some garden refuse in a vacant piece of land between two bungalows.”

An explosion has been reported outside an international hotel in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

<CODE>Rain continues to hamper much of the central Andean region of Peru. This time, torrential rain flooded many parts of the small districts of San Augustin de Cajas and Hualhuas, located in the department of Huancayo. Teofilo Baldeon Rojas, mayor of San Augustine de Cajas, reported to the Andina News Agency that a total of 20 homes and buildings were completely under water after severe rain caused a nearby irrigation canal to flood. According to the mayor, the canal easily overfilled since it was previously used as a garbage dump by residents of the small provincial district. The homes of Eusebia Gonzales and Justa Nuñez were the most effected by the floods. A wall and the entire roof collapsed in Gonzales's home while Nuñez's home suffered serious damage. Both homes have been declared uninhabitable by local authorities. Damage was also evident in the town of Hualhuas, located just 14 kilometers from the city of Incontrastable. In all, 8 homes have been destroyed by the flooding in Hualuas.
