ใช่ครับพายุลูกนี้ใหญ่กว่าพายุเกย์และมีความรุนแรงกว่าพายุเกย์อีกครับความเร็วขนาดนี้ผมว่าน่ากลัวนะครับสำหรับประเทศพม่าและประเทศไทยเราด้วยผมคิดว่ามันลงมาถล่มไทยในอีกไม่กี่24ชั่วโมงขางหน้าเตรียมรับมือเถอะครับประเทศไทยต้องรับมืออย่างหนักแน่นอนเพราะมันเคลื่อนมาทางฝั่งตะวันออกมันไม่ไปทางเหนือแล้วคิดแล้วก็น่ากลัวนะครับความรุนแรงของพายุลูกนี้ขอย้ำว่ารุนแรงกว่าพายุเกย์มากเลยทีเดยวครับเหมือนที่คุณแม่ผมบอกครับพายุเกย์มันดึงดูดเมฆไอน้ำที่ลอยอยู่ข้างตัวมันดูดให้เข้าหาพายุในตัวมันเองทำใมท้องฟ้าโปร่งประมาณ1-3วันหลังจากนั้นมันก็ถล่มพัดบ้านพัดต้นบ้านสิ่งกีดขว้างไปหมดครับน่ากลัวมากครับ </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

ขอเเจ้งเรื่องพายุ ระดับ 4 -5

โดยส่วนใหญ่ คนที่เคยประสบกับพายุไต้ฝุ่น ระดับ 4 ระดับ 5 เล่าทางสารคดีว่า ก่อนที่พายุใหญ่ระดับนี้จะถล่มเนี่ย ก่อนหน้าที่พายุจะเข้า 12-24 หรือ กว่านั้น ท้องฟ้ามักจะเเจ่มใสผิดปกติ คือตากผ้าเเห้งเลย เเต่อากาศค่อนข้างอบอ้าวนะครับ เเต่หลังจากนั้นไม่นานพายุก็เข้ามาน่ากลัวมากๆระดับ 4-5 ส่วนใหญ่เขาจะเล่าว่าก่อนมันจะเข้าถล่มฟ้ามักจะเเดงฉาน เหมือนสีเลือดน่ากลัว ผมเข้าใจว่าพายุโดยส่วนใหญ่มักจะเข้าตอนช่วงเย็นๆ หรือช่วงเช้าตรู่ เลยทำให้สีมันเเดงขนาดนั้น คนที่เคยประสบกับ เกย์ ก็เล่ามางี้

เห็นฟ้าโปร่งๆเเดดออกอย่างนี้นะ คนส่วนใหญ่บอกว่าพายุใหญ่กำลังมาเเล้ว เเล้วส่วนใหญ่เป็นพายุระดับ 5 ด้วย

สำหรับตอนนี้ นาร์กิส เป็รระดับ 4 เเล้ว มีพ่อบอกพ่อ มี่เเม่บอกเเม่เตรียมไว้เลยเเถวด้านตะวันตกน่ะ </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

 

Cyclone NARGIS (01B) Cat 3: ไซโคลน “NARGIS” ได้ทวีขึ้นเป็นพายุระดับ 3 อย่างรวดเร็ว เมื่อ 01.00 น. วันนี้(02พ.ค.51)
02 พฤษพาคม 2551 เวลา 01.00 น.

ภาพถ่ายดาวเทียมบริเวณมหาสมุทรมหาสมุทรอินเดีย ทะเลอาหรับ อ่าวเบงกอล อ่าวไทย และทะเลจีนใต้ วันที่ 02 พฤษพาคม 2551 /01.00 น. ปรากฎพายุหมุนเขตร้อน 1 ลูก

1) Cyclone NARGIS (01B,15.9N 92.2E,110kts,Cat 3): เมื่อเวลา 01.00 วันนี้ (02พ.ค.51) ไซโคลน NARGIS “นาร์กิส/01B” บริเวณอ่าวเบงกอล ได้ทวีขึ้นเป็นพายุไซโคลนระดับ 3 อย่างรวดเร็ว เมื่อ 01.00 น. วันนี้(02พ.ค.51) ที่ละติจูด 15.9 องศาเหนือ ลองจิจูด 92.2 องศาตะวันออก มีศูนย์กลางห่ างจากเมือง ย่างกุ้ง ประเทศพม่า ไปทางตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ประมาณ 491 กิโลเมตร กำลังเคลื่อนตัวไปทางตะวันออก 10 นอต(19 กิโลเมตรต่อชั่วโมง)ในรอบ 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา พายุลูกนี้ทวีความรุนแรงขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็วใน 24 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมาหรือตั้งแต่ 01.00 น.วานนี้(01พ.ค.51) จนถึง 01.00 น.วันนี้(02พ.ค.51) จากภาพถ่ายดาวเทียม บ่งบอกว่าตาพายุมีขนาดเล็กและไม่ชัดเจนนัก และจากภาพถ่ายดาวเทียมพายุลูกนี้มีช่วงความรุนแรงเฉลี่ยประมาณ 102-115 นอต(189-213 กิโลเมตรต่อชั่วโมง)ซึ่งบ่งชี้ว่าพายุมีความรุนแรงเพิ่มขึ้นจากเดิมมาก พายุลูกนี้มีทิศทางการเคลื่อนตัวไปทางตะวันออกตามกระแสลมตะวันตก พายุลูกนี้มี ความเร็วลมสูงสุดใกล้ศูนย์กลางประมาณ 110 นอต(204 กิโลเมตรต่อชั่วโมง) ความกดอากาศที่พื้นผิวประมาณ 941 มิลลิบาร์ คลื่นทะเลสูงสุดประมาณ 9 เมตร เมื่อ 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา หรือตั้งแต่เวลา 19.00 วานนี้-01.00 น. วันนี้(02พ.ค.51) / คาดไซโคลน NARGIS (นาร์กิส/01B) ค่าดว่าพายุ นากิส จะทวีความรุนแรงขึ้นต่อไปอีกเล็กน้อยในอีก 6-12 ชั่วโมงข้างหน้าหรือช่วงตั้งแต่เวลา 07.00 น. วันนี้(02พ.ค.51) เป็นต้นไป โดยในอีก 6-12 ชั่วโมงข้างหน้าในช่วงเช้า-บ่ายวันนี้หรือ 07.00น.-13.00น.วันนี้(02พ.ค.51) เป็นต้นไปพายุจะทวีขึ้นเป็นพายุระดับ 4 และจะมีทิศทางเคลื่อนตัวไปทางตะวันออกค่อนทางเหนือเล็กน้อย คาดว่าพายุจะเข้าสู่แผ่นดินใหญ่ประเทศพม่าในวันนี้หรือช่วงเวลา 7.00น.(02พ.ค.51)เป็นต้นไป และศูนย์กลางพายุจะเคลื่อนเข้าสู่ชายฝั่งประเทศพม่าในช่วงเวลา 19.00น.วันนี้(02พ.ค.51) เป็นต้นไป และเมื่อศูนย์กลางพายุเข้าสู่แผ่นดินใหญ่แล้วพายุจะอ่อนกำลังลงเป็นพายุระดับ 1 ในระยะต่อไป ก่อนที่จะอ่อนกำลังเป็นดีเปรสชั่นแล้วเลยผ่านเข้าสู่ภาคเหนือตอนบน จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน ในวันที่04 พ.ค. ช่วงเวลา 01.00น. (ประกาศ Joint Typhoon Warning Center หรือ JTWC )


- (เพิ่มเติม) พายุไซโคลน NARGIS(นาร์กิส/01B) ในช่วงเวลา 12-24ชั่วโมงข้างหน้าหรือ 13.00น.(2พ.ค.51)-01.00น.(3พ.ค.51)อุณหภูมิพื้นผิวน้ำทะเลบริเวณอ่าวเบงกอลตอนกลางถึงตะวันออก จะมีความอุ่นเปลี่ยนค่าเพิ่มขึ้นอีกเพียงเล็กน้อยเท่านั้นแต่ก็เพียงพอที่จะทำให้พายุทวีความรุนแรงขึ้นจากเดิมอย่างมากได้ ประกอบกับกระแสลมในแนวดิ่งบริเวณศูนย์กลางพายุมีกำลังอ่อนลง ส่งผลให้พายุทวีความรุนแรงขึ้นเป็นระดับ 2เละระดับ 3 อย่างรวดเร็วในรอบ 12 ชั่วโมงหรือช่วง 13.00น.วานนี้(1พ.ค.51)-01.00น.วันนี้(02พ.ค.51)ที่ผ่านมา และเนื่องจากอุณหภูมิของน้ำทะเลยังมีความอุ่นอยู่พอสมควร ประกอบกับกระแสลมในแนวดิ่งโดยเฉลี่ยมีกำลังอ่อนอยู่ในช่วงละติจูด 13.0 – 20.0 องศาเหนือ โดยจะทำให้พายุจะทวีขึ้นต่อไปเป็นไซโคลนระดับ 4 (Category 4)ในอีก 6-12 ชั่วโมงข้างหน้าหรือช่วงเวลา 07.00น. วันนี้นี้(02 พ.ค.51) เป็นต้นไป ความรุนแรงของพายุในรอบ 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมาหรือตั่งแต่ 13.00น.วานนี้(1พ.ค.51) จนถึง 01.00น.วันนี้(02พ.ค.51) ความรุนแรงอยู่ในระดับ 6.5 ตามเทคนิคของ DVORAK T-Number เพิ่มขึ้นจากเดิมที่ระดับ 5 CI และ T-Number บ่งบอกว่าพายุมีการก่อตัวและทวีขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็วในรอบ 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา ตาพายุ(EYE STORM) “นาร์กิส” มีขนาดเล็กมาก และไม่ชัดเจนอันเนื่องมาจากการที่ศูนย์กลางพายุมีความรุนแรงแรงและมีค่าไม่คงที่ โดยส่วนใหญ่แล้วยิ่งพายุที่ทวีกำลังแรงขึ้นจากเดิมอย่างรวดเร็วมากๆนั้นจะปรากฎตาพายุไม่ชัดเจนนัก บริพายุลูกนี้จากภาพถ่ายดาวเทียมบ่งบอกว่าถูกปกคลุมไปด้วยเมฆ คิวมูลัส(Cumus Cloud) g\เป็นส่วนใหญ่ สำหรับทิศทางไซโคลน NARGIS (นาร์กิส/01B) นี้เนื่องจากศูนย์กลางพายุอยู่ในช่วงกระแสลมตะวันตกที่กำลังแรงทำให้พายุลูกนี้ถูกกดทำให้มีทิศทางการเคลื่อนตัวไปทางตะวันออกตรงไปในรอบ 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมาหรือเวลา 19.00 วานนี้-01.00 น. วันนี้(02พ.ค.51) แต่คาดว่าศูนย์กลางพายุจะมีทิศทางเคลื่อนตัวไปทางตะวันออกค่อนทางเหนือเล็กน้อยในอีก 6-12 ชั่วโมงข้างหน้าหรือช่วงเวลา 07.00น. วันนี้นี้(02 พ.ค.51) เป็นต้นไป และพายุลูกนี้จะเคลื่อนเข้าสู่ชายฝั่งพม่าในวันนี้ตามที่กล่าวไว้ด้านบนคือ พายุลูกนี้จะเริ่มเคลื่อนเข้าสู่ชายฝั่งพม่าในวันศุกร์ที่ 2 พ.ค.51 ช่วงประมาณเวลา 07.00 น. และศูนย์กลางพายุจะเคลื่อนเข้าสู่ชายฝั่งประเทศพม่า ในวันที่ 2 พ.ค. 51 ประมาณ 19.00 น. ตามเวลาประเทศไทย คาดว่าว่าศูนย์กลางพายุจะเคลื่อนผ่านภาคเหนือตอนบนและภาคตะวันตกได้ในวันที่ 3 พ.ค. 51 เวลาประมาณ 19.00 น. พายุน่าจะลดระดับไปอย่างมากเมื่อเข้าสู่ประเทศไทยเนื่องจากปะทะกับสิ่งกีดขวาง ความฝืดต่างๆ บนแผ่นดินใหญ่ประเทศพม่า โดยมีแนวโน้มอ่อนกำลังลงเป็นระดับโซนร้อนถึงระดับดีเปรสชัน หรือความเร็วลมสูงสุดไกล้ศูนย์กลางประมาณ 30-40 นอต(56-74 กิโลเมตรต่อชั่วโมง) สำหรับจังหวัดที่มีแนวโน้มว่าศูนย์กลางพายุจะเข้ามากที่สุดคือ จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน และขอย้ำอีกทีว่าประเทศไทยจะได้รับอิทธิพลจากพายุตั้งแต่วันที่ 2 พ.ค. 51 ช่วงเวลา 19.00 น.เป็นต้นไป และศูนย์กลางพายุลูกนี้มีแนวโน้มเคลื่อนผ่านเข้าสู่ไทย ในช่วงวันที่ 3 พ.ค. ช่วงเวลา ตั้งแต่ 01.00 น.เป็นต้นไป ขอให้ติดตามพายุลูกนี้อย่างใกล้ชิดโดยเฉพาะจังหวัด แม่ฮ่องสอน ตาก เชียงราย เชียงใหม่ เป็นต้น อาจเกิดฝนตกชุกหน่าแน่นได้ ในช่วง วันที่ 2-5 พ.ค. 51

US Navy ships, including an amphibious assault ship with helicopters and US marines, are standing by off Thailand awaiting permission to join relief efforts in cyclone-hit Myanmar, the Pentagon said Tuesday. The Pentagon and the State Department have begun planning for a humanitarian relief mission even though Myanmar has yet to respond to US offers of aid, Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said. "But that's all we can do at this point, is to plan, because we have not received a request from the Burmese government," Morrell said, using Myanmar's former official name. Myanmar's military government said an estimated 22,000 people were killed by a cyclone that struck the southeast Asian country four days ago. The nearest US navy ships to Myanmar were a four and a half day sail away taking part in an exercise in waters in the Gulf of Thailand, navy officials said. They were led by the USS Essex, an amphibious assault ship that carries 23 helicopters, three landing craft, and a contingent of 1,800 marines. "I know it's a very capable ship for an operation of this nature. It's in the vicinity," said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman.

He said the Essex was "one of any number of assets that could be used if directed to do so." Also with the Essex were the USS Juneau, an amphibious transport dock, USS Harper's Ferry, a dock landing ship, and USS Blue Ridge, a command ship and flagship of the US Seventh Fleet. The amphibious naval group carries enough supplies to support the marine contingent for 30 days, officials said. The marines also can be deployed ashore to set up clean water stations with portable reverse osmosis water purification units, they said. Two US aircraft carrier groups also are in the Pacific -- the USS Kitty Hawk and the USS Nimitz. They are near Okinawa, a navy official said. An expeditionary strike group led by the USS Tarawa, another helicopter-carrying amphibious assault ship, is in waters off western Australia, the navy official said. "There hasn't been a request for assistance and the president made it clear the offer was out there, if they are so inclined," Whitman said.

Report by UN OCHA:

1. Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar on 2 and 3 May 2008, sweeping through the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) delta region and the country's largest city, Yangon. The authorities have declared five states and divisions (Yangon, Ayeyarwady, Bago, Mon and Kayin) to be disaster zones.

2. It is quickly becoming clear that the cyclone has caused unprecedented devastation in the affected areas. Buildings and infrastructure have been severely damaged, and flooding is widespread. The low-lying delta region also suffered from the effects of a sizable storm surge, which is feared to have wiped out whole villages. Latest state media reports put the death toll at approximately 22,500 with 41,000 missing. There are unconfirmed reports that 10,000 are reported as having died in the Delta town of Bogalay alone. .

3. Hundreds of thousands can be expected to be in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. The combined total population of the declared disaster areas is around 24 million. Damaged infrastructure and communications will pose major logistical problems for relief operations. Humanitarian partners in the country have begun the process of collecting information about the scale of the destruction, but access to many areas remains severely restricted. Certain parts of the delta can be reached only by boat, for example.

4. The UN Country Team considers critical needs to be plastic sheeting, water purification tablets, cooking sets, mosquito nets, emergency health kits and food. Reports of water and fuel shortages are already appearing in mainstream media. The food security situation in the country, which was already severe, looks set to become far more acute.

II. NATIONAL RESPONSE

5. Military and police units are carrying out rescue and cleanup operations. The Government has pledged approximately USD 5 million for relief.

III. INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

6. The Government has said it will receive international aid. The UN has been in close consultation with Government about the need for international support, which is available across all the key priority areas. Issuance of visas for critical humanitarian actors as soon will greatly enhance the international community's ability to meet the needs identified by the Government. This is a critical moment for Myanmar's vulnerable populations. In the next few days assessments must be provided or thousands more could die.

Coordinated In-Country Response

7. The RC/HC a.i. was aiming return to Yangon on 06 May. The Office of the acting RC/HC a.i. is in the process of strengthening its coordination capacity, by recruiting information management, NGO liaison, public information and reports staff locally. The IASC Country Team has met during the morning of 6 May to share initial assessment information, and to move the cluster response forward including by the development of a Flash Appeal.

8. UNICEF, IOM, IFRC and the Myanmar Red Cross are deploying assessment teams to affected areas. MRCS is carrying out assessments in some of the worst-hit areas, although their resources are likely to become stretched, given the considerable burden they are shouldering.

9. Water purification tablets are being distributed by assessment teams. Pre-positioned shelter and cooking supplies are also going out. WFP has been able to distribute food assistance in Yangon, in cooperation with MSF Holland. A flight carrying further WFP supplies is due to land in Myanmar tomorrow. Daily movement of small relief items from Yangon to UNDP offices in the delta has been established for areas reachable by road. UNDP is in contact with the Government about possible bolstering of currently limited transportation capacity.

10. Communications in the country are still limited. WFP has been procuring medium-term communications support, as lead of the telecommunications cluster. Landlines are still down, although at least some cell phones are functioning. In regards to Information Management, the Resident Coordinator a.i. has signaled that the Myanmar Information Management Unit (MIMU) will take the lead in IM activities. It is therefore understood that MIMU will cover OCHA's IM responsibilities outlined in the Operational Guidance on Responsibilities of Cluster/Sector Leads & OCHA in Information Management.' OCHA will support the Resident Coordinator's office with IM capacity and guidance where requested and feasible. OCHA's IM activities and support will be coordinated through OCHA's Regional Office for Asia-Pacific in Bangkok.

11. The office of the RC/HC a.i. is preparing a Flash Appeal, in conjunction with IASC partners, though the process is being hampered by difficulties in gathering assessment data. The UN is prepared to make available, immediately, grants from the Central Emergency Response Fund.

12. There are as yet no clear answers about whether customs procedures may be expedited.

Coordination at the regional level

13. An UNDAC team is assembled in Bangkok, ready to deploy; while visa applications are pending, it is providing support for the IASC CT from Bangkok while visa applications have been submitted to the local Myanmar Embassy.

14. OCHA ROAP hosted a second meeting of regional cluster leads on Tuesday, 6 May. Participants exchanged information including items such as staff safety, planned activities, international appeals and visas. Cluster leads were urged to prepare to fully support their IASC CT counterparts and to seek to include NGO partners fully in the process.

15. The key updates relayed from the UN Country Team were that the clusters have been activated, that donors have expressed a clear willingness to support an appeal document, and that the Government is now seeking international assistance.

16. IFRC issued an emergency appeal for a preliminary figure of USD 1.3 million on 6 May. Shelter kits are the key priority. The appeal is in addition to USD 189,263 that has been allocated from the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund to support assessments and distribution of relief items by the Myanmar Red Cross. FACT and RDRT are on standby. IFRC's Regional Disaster Manager is now in Myanmar. The Federation has pre-positioned stocks in Kuala Lumpur and Dubai.

17. Given the variety of information management challenges in-country, discussions are ongoing on how to best strengthen the capacity of the Myanmar Information Management Unit (MIMU), including possibly by deploying a Humanitarian Information Centre (HIC).

Coordination at the global level

18. An IASC Senior Emergency Officers meeting was held on 6 May 2008 at UN Headquarters in New York. Discussed was the urgency to sort the priority issues of visas, access, custom clearance, the next steps in connection to the Flash Appeal/CERF and the capacity of the humanitarian community on the ground. Recommendations for IASC and ERC actions are to be generated.

Update on international assistance

19. OCHA ROAP met with Supreme Commander General Boonsang Niumpradit of the Royal Thai Armed Forces (RTAF) on 6 May to discuss potential Government of Thailand logistical support to the delivery of assistance.

20. The Secretary-General of ASEAN has called on Member States to provide urgent relief assistance to victims of the cyclone. Thailand announced USD 317,000 in in-kind assistance. Singapore announced on 6 May that it will provide USD 200,000 in humanitarian aid. According to a statement released by the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the package includes medical supplies, drinking water, water purifying tablets, tents, ground sheets, blankets, sleeping bags and emergency food. No details are yet available on how the aid will be delivered.

21. The Republic of Korea announced a cash contribution of USD 100,000 and Japan will provide USD 270,000 of in-kind assistance.

22. The European Commission announced on 5 May that it will provide € 2 million (approx USD 3.1 million) in fast-track humanitarian aid. The Netherlands has indicated that it will make € 1 million available. Canada will be providing just under $ 2 million. Denmark has indicated a donation of approximately USD 2.1 million and the UK will provide USD 10 million.

23. US announced today to make USD 3 m available, but on the condition that US experts be granted access to the country and disaster struck areas. This would be on top of the initial announcement of USD 250,000.

24. Initial information received indicates that assistance has been offered by: India (2 naval vessels), Thailand (1 C-130).

A million people are struggling to survive in devastated Burma after Cyclone Nargis tore into the country at the weekend. And with up to 65,000 feared dead, aid chiefs said last night that it was “a disaster on an enormous scale”. Amanda Weisbaum, head of emergency response for Save the Children Fund said: "The full human impact is only now becoming clear and the situation is deteriorating quickly. “We urgently need help to be able to reach children and their families.” The official death toll yesterday was 22,400 with a further 42,000 still missing. But a million people were without clean water, food or shelter. Entire villages have been destroyed by the 120mph cyclone, and vast areas of the country remain under water following the massive storm surge that sent a 12 ft (3.6 metre) tidal wave far inland. More than 10,000 people were killed in one town, Bogalay, in the devastated Irrawaddy Delta, the rice-growing coastal region first hit by the cyclone at noon on Saturday. Yesterday Burma’s secretive military rulers began to reveal the true horror of the storm – the most devastating since the 1991 cyclone that killed 143,000 in Bangladesh. Minister for Relief and Resett-lement Maung Maung Swe said: “More deaths were caused by the tidal wave than the storm itself.

"The wave was up to 12 ft (3.6 metre) high and it swept away half the houses in low-lying villages. They did not have anywhere to flee." Thousands of buildings were flattened, power lines ripped up, key roads blocked by uprooted trees and water supplies disrupted as the worst storm in living memory swept across half of the country. The tidal surge wiped out the rice crop, which was soon to be harvested. Rangoon, the former capital and largest city, took a direct hit, leaving five million cut off and without water or electricity. James East of charity World Vision said: "People are saying this is worse than the tsunami."

Shari Villarosa, the US Charge d’Affaires in Rangoon, said: "There’s no electricity, very limited communications and water is lacking in many neighbourhoods." Outside the city, things are even worse. Whole villages in the Irrawaddy Delta have been wiped off the map and up to 95 per cent of many towns completely destroyed. Yesterday Gordon Brown prom-ised that Britain would do everything it could to ease the suffering, but Burma’s ruling military junta, which rejected aid after the 2004 tsunami, has so far refused to lift visa restrictions for aid workers or duty on relief supplies.

US First Lady Laura Bush has accused the military government of failing to act to protect its people.
She says the Burmese authorities were well aware of the threat from Cyclone Nargis, but failed to issue a timely warning to those in the path of the storm.
India's meteorological agency, which monitors cyclones in the Indian Ocean, says it warned the Burmese authorities 48 hours before the storm struck.
The agency says it told Burma where the storm would hit land and how severe it was expected to be.
Burmese citizens have complained that they were not properly alerted, but Burmese state television issued a statement in English saying warnings were given several days beforehand.
"Timely weather reports were announced and aired through the television, and radio in order to keep the people safe and secure in nationwide," the statement said.
Certainly state media did give some warnings of a storm, but people in Burma say the severity of the cyclone was unclear and no instructions were given as to what action they should take.
Officials from the UN's disaster reduction agency in Geneva say it is clear many people did not have time to seek refuge in secure buildings.
They say the scale of the devastation suggests there was not a proper early warning system.
Burma's military government is likely to face many more questions about how prepared the country was for such a storm and how many lives could have been saved if a tried and tested early warning system was in place.<!-- E BO -->
