That implies, starting from 2022, one statutory holiday will be added to the calendar every two years, all the way to 2030, for a total of five new holidays.

To align with the general holidays’ calendar, Hong Kong’s Legislative Council (LegCo) has approved the third reading of the Employment (Amendment) Bill 2021 on Wednesday (July 7) to increase the number of statutory holidays by five, from the current 12 to 17 days.

That implies, starting from 2022, one statutory holiday will be added to the calendar every two years, all the way to 2030. Buddha’s Birthday will be the first addition next year.

Going forward, Boxing Day, Easter Monday, Good Friday and the day following Good Friday will be added respectively.

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare Law Chi-kwong said the bill has laid out a clear roadmap and schedule for the alignment of the number of statutory holidays with general holidays, aiming to improve the benefits of more than one million Hong Kong workers, as cited in RTHK News.

Law added the current plan has balanced the impact on small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as more than 300,000 employers of foreign domestic helpers.
