Buddhist monk arrested over plotting to kill another monk over temple ownership – Sri Lanka...

Police have arrested the Chief Incumbent of a Buddhist Temple in the Ingiriya town in connection with the offence of conspiracy to assassinate another Buddhist monk. The monk is alleged to have offered over Rs one million to kill the deputy incumbent of the same temple.


Police spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said Panadura Divisional Crime Detective Bureau has arrested a 49-year old Buddhist monk who is the Chief Incumbent of the Deepaloka Vihayara in the Ingiriya town for plotting to kill another Buddhist monk.

Rohana said the investigations have revealed that there had been a dispute between the monk and another party for three years over the ownership of the temple and that the chief incumbent has offered a sum of Rs 1.1 million to the driver of the temple to assassinate the deputy incumbent of the temple.

The driver is evading arrest and police have launched investigations to arrest him.

The monk will be produced before the courts today.
