There is no doubt that Northern Lights were dancing around the Arctic Circle. It would have been a good show--except for the midnight sun:

At first, I thought I'll never witness this eclipse in my area. It was cloudy the whole day and started raining at 7:00pm. I still took my chances to see the lunar eclipse even though I would miss the maximum eclipse part. Amazingly, the sky slightly opened at 8:20pm and all of us who patiently waited were very happy. I'm glad we still saw the moon in umbra from 8:20 to 9:00pm. [/FONT]

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]SUNSET PLANETS: [/FONT] The planets are aligning for a beautiful sunset sky show. Last night on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, Miguel Claro photographed Venus, Mars and Saturn all in a row:

"The planets were beautifully arrayed over the Costa da Caparica," says Claro. "Even the bright lights of Lisbon (lower right in the full-sized photo) could not spoil the show."
Tonight the crescent Moon joins the show. It will appear beside Venus at the end of the line. For the rest of the week, the Moon will planet-hop from Venus to Mars to Saturn on successive nights. Go outside at sunset and take a look! Sky maps: July 14, 15, 16.

"During the first few minutes of sunrise only a fraction of the sunlight makes it's way to the observer - mostly from the red part of visible spectrum," notes Toumilovitch. "During this time large sunspots can be seen without a special solar filter." Be careful, though! Even when dimmed by clouds and haze, direct sunlight can hurt your eyes. "If you try to take a picture like this," advises Toumilovitch, "look only at the screen of your digital camera, not the optical viewfinder."

According to the International Meteor Organization, dark-sky observers are now counting more than 70 Perseids per hour, including many fireballs. Be alert for Perseids from 10 pm on Thursday, Aug. 12th, until sunrise on Friday, Aug. 13th. The darkest hours before dawn are usually best.


"It's been a great night with lots of meteors," reports Pete Lawrence from Selsey UK. "I pointed my camera at the Pleiades and this Perseid obligingly passed by."

Andy Keen reports from Wales: "Tonight I witnessed approximately 40 meteors over Powys, Mid Wales, between the hours of 10.45 pm and 12.30 am. It was an absolutely amazing spectacle--and well worth climbing a mountain for!"

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]BIG PERSEID: [/FONT] The vast majority of meteoroids that hit Earth's atmosphere during last week's Perseid meteor shower were mere specks of comet dust, massing no more than a fraction of a gram. This one was a big exception:

"The University of Western Ontario network of all-sky cameras captured this Perseid on August 13th," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "It weighed in at about 1.5 kilograms." The 14-cm comet chunk hit Earth's atmosphere at 140,000 mph, creating a flash of light about as bright as a quarter Moon. "Now that was a Perseid!"
"There is another somewhat dimmer Perseid fireball just below it," points out Cooke. "It massed only 2 grams--but that was still enough to make a flash as bright as Venus. In this one image," he marvels, "we see two meteoroids with a mass ratio of 750:1."

"This beautiful fireball of Venus brightness flew out of the constellation Cygnus at 20:47 UT," says Dijkstra. "It's a pity about the clouds--but through clouds is often the only way we get to see meteors in Holland."




Kappa Cygnid meteoroids are thought to be debris from the breakup of a giant comet some 6000 years ago. Today, all that's left is a broad stream of dust and gravel and an asteroid-like fragment named "2008 ED69." Fortunately, only the dust and gravel intersect the orbit of Earth; 2008 ED69 poses no threat of impact.
The kappa Cygnids peak on August 18th-19th with 3 to 4 meteors per hour. That's not a large number, but kappa Cygnids tend to be fireballs, so even one is enough for a good show. Tonight, be alert for lights behind the clouds!

Moon is shrinking, say astronomers

Astronomers say they have found previously undetected landforms that indicate the Moon has been shrinking, albeit by only a tiny amount.


The intriguing features, called lobate scarps, are faults created when the Moon's once-molten interior began to cool, causing the lunar surface to contract and then crinkle, astronomers said in the US journal Science.


Relative to the Moon's age, estimated at 4.5 billion years, the contraction is recent, occurring less than a billion years ago and is measured at about 100 metres.


Lobate scarps were first spotted near the lunar equator in the 1970s by panoramic cameras aboard the Apollo 15, 16 and 17 missions.


Fourteen new faults have been spotted in high-resolution images taken by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
The new discoveries show the scarps are globally distributed and not clustered in equatorial regions, and this provides powerful evidence for the contraction scenario.


The investigation was headed by Thomas Watters of the Centre for Earth and Planetary Studies at the Smithsonian Museum's National Air and Space Museum in Washington.
